Situated in the Rara National Park, this lake is the largest in Nepal and offers a serene and untouched natural environment. Rara Lake is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and towering peaks, making it a paradise for nature lovers and trekkers seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The journey from Kathmandu to Kohalpur takes around 11 hours by a pleasant road trip. You’ll find a variety of hotels in the area that match your budget. You can spend the night in Kohalpur.
Begin your journey early in the morning from Kohalpur, and you’ll have about a 2.5-hour drive covering approximately 100 kilometers to reach Sukhet. Then, the drive from Surkhet to Manma in Kalikot spans roughly 150 kilometers and will require a full day to complete. If you decide to skip a few places along the way, you’ll find that the road conditions are generally favorable. This portion of your trip promises to be quite picturesque as you’ll be passing through a SAL forest.
Begin your journey early in the morning, embarking on a roughly 20-minute drive from Nagma. The road initially is unpaved and somewhat rugged until you reach Rara Lake. From there, you’ll be following the course of the Karnali river for about 4 hours, passing through villages and the Sallaha forest.
After a 20-minute drive from Talcha Airport, you’ll spot a small cottage where you should park your vehicle. From here, it’s a 30-minute walk to reach the lake. This should suffice if you simply want to see the lake.
However, if you wish to stay by the lakeside and relish the breathtaking views, you can take a walk of approximately 1.5 hours along the lake’s edge. This will lead you to a hotel situated on the riverbank. Alternatively, you also have the option to set up a tent by the lake.
Having breakfast in the early morning and embarking on a boat trip to discover the lake is a prudent choice. The cost for an extended boat tour is just Rs 700 per individual, offering a comprehensive scenic experience. During daylight hours, you can also undertake a hike up the hill, affording you the most magnificent lake view.
Travel back to Manma, Kalikot using the same path you took to reach Rara two days ago. Spend the night in Manma, Kalikot.
Begin your day at dawn, and along your journey, you’ll encounter numerous spots to pause and enjoy a cup of tea. If you kickstart your day at 6 AM, you’ll have no trouble reaching Kohalpur by nightfall. However, if you begin later, you’ll likely find yourself lodging in Surkeht.
